Reports have emerged that British pub giant Wetehrspoons is set to but two of Ireland’s biggest and most famous gay bars. The two bars, The George and The Dragon are two of the country’s most well known spots for the LGBT community and are both located on South Great George’s Street, in Dublin’s South City Centre.
Earlier this year the two bars went on sale with a price tag of €3.5million each. They are being sold along with two other popular Dublin bars Cafe en Sceine and Howl at the Moon. All four bars were part of the Capital Bar Group, which went into receivership.
Wetherspoons is the UKs largest chain of bars and pubs, with over 900 in locations right across the UK. They have been eyeing up entering the Irish market sometime. It has nine pubs located in the North and has recently acquired two iconic bars in the Republic; one in Cork and the other in Blackrock, Co. Dublin.
According to reports by The Sunday Independent the pub giant is now in talks to purchase the four bars located in The Capital Bar Groups portfolio. The four bars have a total price tag €12million.
The company is setting up to open 30 bars across the Republic over the next few years by purchasing closed or struggling premises at prices 70% below boom.
